If the 9-5 is driving you crazy and you need to shift lanes into a new career, then why not train our next generation of road users by becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)?
Put you in the driving seat of your own future, be your own boss and pass on your driving knowledge to aspiring drivers.
There are fewer than 40,000 Approved Driving Instructors in the UK, compared to nearly 42 million people holding UK driving licenses. This means driving instructors make up less than 0.1% of the country’s driving population!
Here at Cherry Driving School, we can help you along each step of the process and best prepare you for ADI exams, utilising our fleet of experienced instructors, as well as the strong reputation we have developed over the years.
For over 30 years we have been a tried, tested and trusted business that helps new drivers obtain their freedom, and we hope to provide that same luxury to those interested in becoming approved driving instructors.
And while it may seem daunting, the steps you need to take to become an ADI aren’t as complex as you’d think…
How long does it take to be a driving instructor?
On average, it should take around 6-12 months to become a fully qualified driving instructor, factoring in the various steps you must take to ensure your eligibility. These steps are:
- Applying to the DVSA and completing a background check
- Completing a theory test of multiple-choice questions and hazard perception, similar to your usual driving theory test
- A driving ability test in which you must demonstrate high-quality driving and awareness of your surroundings
- An instructional ability test where you’ll be rated on lesson planning, risk assessment and your ability to adapt to pupil needs, by a DVSA examiner

Is it hard to become a driving instructor?
Honestly, no, but we would say that! While it requires a fair few rounds of examination and a number of criteria to be met, the process is not overly difficult and is attainable to anyone with an interest in becoming a driving instructor. So long as you have the time, patience and dedication to do it, we’re more than happy to help. Contact us here for more information.
“Best decision I ever made”
Don’t just take our word for it, many of our ADIs have flourished through our training and support, including Krystle, who said: “They were so supportive throughout and made me feel part of the team. It is good to know that I have such a great supportive group behind me now as a fully qualified female instructor.”
Jim, another of our qualified instructors, said: “The support I received was amazing. I passed and became a fully qualified ADI with Cherry, best decision I ever made.”
One of our instructors, Micky, trained for his ADI exams alongside his full-time job, and said Cherry’s support was a great help to him: “My trainer was excellent at showing me what it takes and means to be a driving instructor. I would highly recommend Cherry Driving School if you’re thinking of embarking on a career to become an Approved Driving Instructor.”
