There are three main parts to become in ADI (Approved Driving Instructor).
Part 1 – Theory and Hazard Perception Test – This is similar to the test you take when learning to drive but more advanced. It is split into four sections:
- road procedure
- traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
- driving test, disabilities, and the law
- publications and instructional techniques
The passing mark is 85/100 and you must get at least 20/25 on each of the sections.
Part 2 – There are 5 sections to this part of the test which is more about examining your driving skill:
- an eyesight check
- ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
- general driving ability
- manoeuvres
- independent driving
Part 3 – Part 3 of the test is to examine your ability to provide instructions and guidance to would be students. This part of the test is examined by a driving and vehicle standards officer who will be marking you on 17 areas of competence that are grouped into 3 categories:
- lesson planning
- risk management
- teaching and learning strategies
